Boy 3: We begin our school contest- show Miss Burns Night dedicated to Scotland's greatest poet, Robert Burns! Our girls are ready to present their stories about the poet! We are all attention! Supposed speeches of girls (Task 1): 1. Hi! My name is Irina. One day I found out that Robert Burns is a very special poet in the world. Let me tell you about his biography now. Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, was born on January 25, 1759, in a small clay cottage at Alleyway, in Ayrshire, Scotland. His father, William Burns, was a poor farmer. He built this small clay cottage with his own hands: There were seven children in the family, and Robert was the eldest. His father knew the value of a good education, and he tried to give his children the best education he could afford. Robert was sent to school at the age of six, but as his father could not pay for the two sons, Robert and his brother Gilbert attended school in turn. When not at school, the boys helped their father with his work in the fields. But soon the teacher left, the poet's father taught the children himself. Reading and writing, arithmetic, English grammar, history, literature, French and Latin — that was Robert Burns’ education. Robert's mother knew many Scottish songs and ballads and often sang them to her son in his childhood. She died in 1820. She lived long and enjoyed the fame of her poet son. 2. Hi! I am Natasha. Nice to see you! I am interested in Robert Burns life, too, and have found some cute facts about him. Here they are. Robert Burns' began writing poems at the age of 15; his poems were first published in 1786 in Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect. Burns was primarily a poet but was also a fan of Scottish songs; many of his poems were later rewritten as songs. As well as making original compositions, Burns also collected folk songs from across Scotland, often revising or adapting them. His poem (and song) Auld Lang Syne is often sung at Hogmany . In 2011 Robert Burns Museum opened which houses manuscripts and artefacts of Robert Burns such as bibles, socks and writing set, there is also the Burns Cottage where Robert Burns was born, the historic landmarks which were the inspiration for some of his poems and a garden and a monument created in his memory. The Robert Burns Museum is interactive for adults and children. The poet died at the age of 37 and his wife Jean Armour gave birth to their ninth child, Maxwell Burn the day of his funeral. It was the year 1796. 3. Hallo! My name is Olga and I would like to tell you about the traditions of celibrating Burns Night. Well, It is customary to celebrate Burns Birthday or Burns Night with a Burns Supper. It begins with a welcoming speech from the host, followed by the guests sitting at the table and saying grace. A soup course is served, consisting of a Scotch broth or potato soup, before the main course, the mandatory haggis, is brought into the room. The entrance of the haggis is an integral part of the celebrations and is usually accompanied by a piper playing one of Burns’ folk songs. By tradition Haggis should be brought in on a silver serving plate. As the haggis is set upon the table, Burns’ poem, Ode To a Haggis, is recited. Once the poem is finished, guests can get down to the meal and the many toasts that follow. The haggis is usually accompanied by tatties (potatoes) and neeps (turnips). A traditional Scottish dessert follows the main course. Then guests would read out Robert Burns poems, sing his songs and dance. Boy 1: Thank you for interesting information. We really enjoyed your manner to speak English. Boy 2: By the way, friends, Burns Night always starts with bagpipes and haggis, doesn’t it? Boy 3: Well, why not to welcome now very Scottish haggis? It will be cool. (Под звуки волынки – музыку можно подобрать по вкусу по интернету – торжественно входит шотландец, в руках которого поднос. (Девочки рассказывают стихи Роберта Бернса, выученные заранее в качестве домашнего задания) Poems supposed to be recited: 1. My heart’s in the Highland My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here, My heart’s in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer; Chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe, My heart’s in the Highlands, wherever I go. 8 Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North, The birth-place of Valour, the country of Worth; Wherever I wander, wherever I rove, The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.
Farewell to the mountains, high-cover’d with snow, Farewell to the straths and green vallies below; Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods, Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods. My heart’s in the Highlands…
2. O, my love is like a red, red rose, That is newly sprung in June. O, my love is like the melody, That is sweetly played in tune.
As fair are you, my lovely lass, So deep in love am I, And I will love you still, my Dear, Till all the seas go dry.
Till all the seas go dry, my Dear, And the rocks melt with the sun! O I will love you still, my Dear, While the sands of life shall run.
And fare you well, my only Love, And fare you well a while! And I will come again, my Love, Although it were ten thousand mile!
3. One Fond Kiss
One fond kiss, and then we sever! One farewell, and then forever! Deep in heart-wrung tears I will pledge you, Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.
Who shall say that Fortune grieves him, While the star of hope she leaves him? Me, no cheerful twinkle lights me, Dark despair around overtakes me.
