Учитель: - Dear guests, we are very glad to meet you here, in Alexandrov. (слайд 2) Our town has a fascinating history and it would be difficult to find another Russian city that would compare with it in this respect. Once a small hunting station, and later an estate of the grand prince, Alexandrov became virtually the capital of Russia in the 1560s and 1570s. We are sure that you have already heard about that period in our history. Unquestionably, the name of our town is closely connected with the name of Ivan the Terrible who has lived here for 17 years. (слайд 3) But he wasn’t the only monarch who has been here, in Alexandrov. Today we want to tell you about the members of the house of Romanov in Alexandrovskaya Sloboda as the 400th anniversary of their reign is going to be celebrated this year. The students of the 8th forms will be your guides. They will make efforts to tell you everything they know.
Экскурсовод 1: - (слайд 4)Soon after Tsar Mikhail Feodorovich, the first of the Romanov dynasty and one who never missed a chance to stress his spiritual kinship with Ivan the Terrible had ascended the throne, he turned his attention to the former residence of Ivan the Terrible. He ordered to build a royal residence here as the tsar’s and tsarina’s resting place on the route of their journeys of piety. It was built in 1635, and a lot of members of the royal family stayed here. Unfortunately, the buildings were wooden and have not survived.
Экскурсовод 2: - (слайд 5) Please pay attention to this picture of Alexei Mikhailovich. It was made in XVII century and it is kept in the collection of our local museum "Alexandrovskaya Sloboda”. This Tsar paid particular attention to the design of the royal buildings not far from Moscow, and surely in Alexandrovskaya Sloboda. During this period Sloboda has become more remarkable settlement than other royal residences, as it was rather spacious, and had larger population. Alexei Mikhailovich sent royal icon painters here to restore and reconstruct the cathedral churches. Alexandrov stables were particularly popular with the royal family. In XVIIth century they were included into the list of privileged royal stables. They supplied horses to the army and for the court. Most of all, the deeply religious Tsar considered the very foundation of the convent at a place connected with the memories of the time of Ivan the Terrible as a kind of atonement. The Convent of the Dormition was organized here in 1651. Alexei Mikhailovich presented it with parcels of land, money and some other gifts. Some scientists think that the Tsar visited the convent in 1671.
Экскурсовод 3: - (слайд 6) Feodor Alexeevich, the son of Alexei Mikhailovich loved Alexandrovskaya Sloboda dearly. He has been on the throne for 6 years only. But his visits to Sloboda were annual. He found it a splendid place for resting. He was fond of purebred horses and he liked to admire them although he couldn’t ride because of his sickly condition. The number of horses was increased and our stables were considered to be the best all over Russia. In 1682, the last year of Feodor’s reign, the gate church was consecrated in the honour of Feоdor Stratilat, the patron saint of the Tsar.
Экскурсовод 4: - (слайд 7) On the 15th of September 1689 the Great Tsar Peter I with his mother Natalia Kirillovna and his first wife Evdokiya Fyodorovna (слайд 8) and with his court visited Alexandrovskaya Sloboda during his "funny” march. For the whole week there were manoeuvres in the fields close to the Sloboda.
Экскурсовод 5: - (слайд 8) Look at the portrait of Natalia Kirillovna. She was a widow of Alexei Mikhailovich and the only Tsarina who didn’t take the veil after her husband’s death. She devoted her life to her son Peter I. And here, in Alexandrovskaya Sloboda, she was watching how the military skills of her son grew. During one of her visits here she endowed richly the Cathedral Church. Later, 6-year old son of Peter I also endowed it. Экскурсовод 6: - ( слайд 9) At the end of the seventeenth and early in the eighteenth century Marfa Alexeevna, stepsister of Tsar Peter I, was imprisoned here, in Alexandrovskaya Sloboda. She was brought there in October 1698, after the investigation of the case of conspiracy by Princess Sophia against Peter the Great disclosed Princess Marfa’s involvement in it. In May 1699 Marfa, like Sophia, was forced to take the veil. As Sister Margaret she lived in the Convent of the Dormition in Alexandrov up to her death in 1708. We know the letters the nun-princess wrote to the members of the royal family and to various influential persons. They are full of complaints of bad health and the miserable, poverty-stricken life which was in such contrast to the nun’s royal origin. "Though I might be God knows where, I am still a daughter of my father, and my patronymic is Alexeevna”, she says in a letter to Natalia Alexeevna, Peter the Great’s favourite sister. Marfa was buried in the crypt of the convent’s Church of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. Экскурсовод 7: - ( слайд 10) In 1727 Peter’s daughter Elisabeth took possession of Alexandrovskaya Sloboda. Princess Elizabeth, however, was anything but poor. On the hill across the way from the Cathedral of the Nativity, outside the convent grounds, a palace containing winter and summer chambers was built for her on a stone foundation, with outbuildings scattered on the hillside. In winter she liked to skate on the Seraya River and in summer she preferred boating here. She liked to spend hours listening to the countrymen singing and watching them dancing. (слайд 11) But during the reign of Anna Ioanovna, when Elizabeth as an obvious contender to the throne was in disgrace, she frequently visited Sloboda and at times spent many months there in near-imprisonment. A town hall was built in the market-place, and the windows of the Princess’s palace afforded a good view of it. The palace has not survived, and we have no drawings or pictures of it. Elizabeth didn’t forget Sloboda even when she became the Tsarina. She visited it in 1744 and was welcomed by exulted settlements. On the 3d of March 1745 she ordered to start the first state school for children of Sloboda.
Экскурсовод 8: - ( слайд 12) Under the decree of Ekaterina II Alexandrovskaya Sloboda was officially proclaimed a town in 1778. It was a peaceful provincial town, a district centre in the Vladimir Province. Alexandrov didn’t really come to life until 1874, when a railway line was built via Alexandrov linking Moscow to the northern provinces.
Экскурсовод 9: - (слайд 13) 80 years later a significant event took place in Alexandrov. On the 23d of August 1823 Alexander Pavlovich, the Emperor of Russia, stayed here for the rest during his trip from Pereslavl-Zalesskiy to Moscow. As the citizens were notified about it in advance, the house of the richest merchant Zubov was prepared for the meeting. The Emperor thanked town dwellers, gave presents to the owner of the house. His visit wasn’t long but made a strong impression on people.
Учитель: - Well, we told you the story of relations between the House of Romanov and our town Alexandrov. As you see, the ruling dynasty has always perceived Alexandrov as its property and the place where they could rest.
